HTC has an annoying habit. After releasing its annual flagships, instead of working on different models, the company brings improved versions of these important smartphones. It’s the case of the One M8s, which came in May, more than a year later after the release of the One M8. This new model is not as advanced as the One M9, but it’s interesting to compare their specs and features.

Designs and Displays

There’s no difference between the screens of these phones, as they’re both Super LCD3 and have a diagonal of 5-inch, while the resolution is Full HD (1080×1920 pixels) and gives a pixel density of 441ppi. Therefore, they are both equally sharp and the images have the same tones.

Even the design is similar, with the exception that the M9 has a rear camera with a square lens, while the M8s has a dual rear camera with circular lenses. But both phones have a metallic body with two strips at the top and bottom, while on the front side were placed two loud speakers. The One M8s is available in the same color options as the One M8 – Gunmetal Gray, Glacial Silver and Amber Gold, while the One M9 comes in Gunmetal Gray and Amber Gold shades, but it also has two variants with a dual-tone design: Silver/Rose gold, Gold/Pink, meaning that the back has a color and the frame has another color.

The One M9 is shorter (144.6mm compared to 146.4mm), but it has the same thickness (9.6mm) as the One M8s.

Without a doubt, the One M9 has a more powerful processor, which is a 64bit Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 octa core consisting of two quad core processors running at 1.5GHz and 2GHz, which are paired with 3GB of RAM, while the One M8s has an inferior 64bit Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 octa core processor with four cores running at 1.7GHz and four cores running at 1GHz, but they’re paired with 2GB of RAM.

Both phones are housing an internal memory of 32GB, which can be increased up to 128GB with a microSD card, but the One M8s has another variant with a capacity of 16GB.

Cameras and Batteries

The One M9 has a more advanced rear camera with a resolution of 20MP, which supports dual-LED, autofocus, HDR and other usual features, while the front camera is the 4MP Ultrapixel shooter from the back of the One M8.

The One M8s has a pair of rear cameras: the main camera is 13MP and above it there’s another camera of 2MP, wile the front camera is better than that from the One M9, as it supports 5MP.

The batteries are both Li-Po and have a capacity of 2840mAh, but on paper, the M9 has a longer life.
