In 2014, Google released a phablet created by Motorola and a tablet created by HTC. This year, there are two phones to choose from – the smaller 5X, which is somehow a successor of the Nexus 5 2013 model created by LG, while the Huawei Nexus 6P replaces the Nexus 6. We’ll put the two new devices side by side and analyze the differences between them. You should know that they’re the first phones to run on the latest Marshmallow, which is an improvement over Lollipop.

Designs and Displays

Besides having different sizes, the Nexus 5X and 6P don’t have a similar design, because LG opted for a plastic exterior with three variants of colors: Carbon, Quartz and Ice and the back has curved edges and a fingerprint scanner below the rear camera. Unlike the Nexus 5, which had a floating arc design, this new model has a rectangular body, which is slightly larger (147.0×72.6×7.9 mm) and on the back, there’s a camera placed in the top center (it blows out). The screen measures 5.2-inch and uses IPS LCD technology, but LG hasn’t increased the resolution, being limited to Full HD, which gives a pixel density of 424ppi.

The 6P is smaller than the Nexus 6, but much larger than the 5X, as it measures 159.4×77.8×7.3mm. Its body is made of aluminum and at the top, it has a black bar which contains the camera (in the left side), NFC and antennas. The problem is that ZTE accused Huawei of copying one of its devices, the Grand S, because that phone has also a wide band on its back, with rounded corners. The three color options of the Nexus 6P are Aluminum, Graphite and Frost and the screen is an AMOLED with a diagonal of 5.7-inch, but which is capable of supporting a QHD (2K) resolution with 518ppi. The screen is sharper and the images are very vibrant, so you’ll have a pleasant experience with this phone. Let’s not forget that the Nexus Imprint fingerprint scanner was also included to the back of the Nexus 6P and likewise the nexus 5X, it has a USB 3.0 Type-C reversible fast charger.

The Nexus 5X has the same processor as the LG G4, which is a Qualcomm MSM8992 Snapdragon 808 with four cores clocked at 1.44GHz and two cores clocked at 1.82GHz, but the RAM capacity is lower at 2GB. The internal memory is available in the same variants of 16GB and 32GB, which can’t be expanded, so if you know that you’ll be saving lots of videos and photos, then you’ll need the second variant.

The Nexus 6P has the faster Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 octa core with four cores clocked at 1.55GHz and four cores clocked at 2GHz, but this is the second version, which fixed the overheating problem. Also, the device houses 3GB of RAM and there are three variants of internal storage – 32/64/128 GB, but there’s no room for expansion, either.

Both devices have a 12.3MP lens with 1.55µm pixel size and they lack OIS and can’t record 4K videos, but the Nexus 6P has in addition laser autofocus and the front camera has a higher resolution of 8MP, which outperforms the 5MP other camera of the Nexus 5X.

The Nexus 5X has a battery of 2700mAh, which has been increased from 2300mAh, while the Nexus 6P houses an enormous battery of 3450mAh, which has a longer life than the 3220mAh cell of the Nexus 6.

Battery capacity of both Nexus devices has significantly improved from the last Nexus generation. Battery life has previously been criticized in these Google handsets, but it seems that this particular element of the smartphone range is about to improve significantly.

The 16GB variant of the Nexus 5X is priced at $379, while the 32GB version of the Nexus 6P costs $499.
