The new Microsoft Edge that came in with Windows 10 has received new updates from Skype.

The Microsoft-owned app has rolled out updates that will mean the new Edge Browser does not need any third party plug-in to run Skype.

This move could lead to increased popularity of Microsoft Edge among users of Windows OS as far as Skype is concerned. It is true because unlike in the past, there is no time-consuming installation of plug-ins to use this VoIP app on your Windows 10 PC. The main reason this move could make this browser very popular is because it comes as a standard application on the new Windows 10.

In short, what this means is that users of Skype will now have automatic access to the services of free voice and video calling as well as chatting services.

Skype’s dominance is not threatened by WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger’s rise

Skype is the granddaddy of VoIP services. It began in 2003 and since then, it has managed to spread its wings in almost every direction, be it on PCs, smartphones, tablets and even on Smart TVs. This is something that saw the app recording an active user base of 4.9 million people per day, according to last year’s revelations.

This application continues to see success despite the fact that WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Viber, SnapChat and other apps keep on adding more and more users to their platforms.

In a statement, Microsoft wrote that “beginning later this year, users of Skype will be able to enjoy free voice and video calling services directly from Microsoft Edge without the need of installing a plug-in. We are also working on ensuring the same seamless experience is brought to Skype for Business app.”

This leaves other web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome behind as they will still require a plug-in for users to make Skype voice and video calls on the latest Windows 10. There are millions of users who will receive the new Microsoft Windows 10 upgrade for free and as such, this new feature is expected to be a hit among users of the Edge browser.

Microsoft has been striving as far as streamlining its offerings to the new Windows 10 platform is concerned and for sure, a lot has come in. The OS is still “incomplete” as more updates, and new additions are still in progress. So, expect more and more changes in the system as time flies.
