When Facebook announced that chat services will not be available directly from the Facebook app for mobiles, many people were very unhappy with this move.

Over a year down the line, the app has more than 1 billion downloads and over 700 million active users. This looks like a joke, doesn’t it? Well, things are even going to get better for this messaging app thanks to the recent introduction of M, an AI-based virtual personal assistant that has been integrated into the Messenger app.

While this announcement might come as good news to Facebook and users of the chat service Messenger, it is kind of a massive blow in the face of Google. This will even get tougher for Google is Facebook manages to bring this M service to WhatsApp, another chat app that boasts a user base of over 900 million users. If you are still wondering how this product is going to affect the massive dominance of Google on the internet, well, it’s all about the search and AdWords services of this search engine giant.

So, why is Google finding itself in this situation?

Well, Google’s case is one of those classic innovator dilemmas. The company has built a massive business model around AdWords, and it is through this service that the company makes its billions of dollars. When you see Google offering lots of its services for free as well as venture into some awesome, wildly ambitious forays such as self-driving cars, don’t be surprised where this establishment gets these huge sums of money to sponsor these projects.

The AdWords business model is of course driven forward by the amazing search services the company provides to millions of users. However, Google deeply knows that keyword search, which is what drives its current empire, is no longer the future. Indeed, search is moving from being based on keywords and headed towards using AI-based technology.

Google has been trying to position itself towards this change by introducing a digital assistant known as Google Now; however, this service received a recent blow when massive employees associated with this tool started leaving this platform. The future of search is an AI-based digital assistant that is capable of completing different tasks, and this is exactly what M is all about. This assistant will be able to understand and predict what you need and then deliver on them without involving you directly.

Rather than come up with a list of links leading you to where the results to what you want are, this tool will only come back with a completed task or a definitive result. If any of these is not possible, this tool will, of course, ask you for more information about what you want, until it gets the results right, just like you want them.

This is where Google is having problems as its search results, including Google Now’s, come in theform of links where users still need to click on them to find what they want on their own.
