The Surface Pro 3 was released on May 2014 and Microsoft claimed that it was faster than Apple’s MacBook. In addition, the tablet came with a digital pen with which the users could draw on their screens, while the Type Cover (keyboard), which was sold separately, transformed the device into a laptop. Apple was envious of Microsoft’s success and created a similar tablet – iPad Pro, but which is quite expensive and both the stylus and keyboard must be purchased separately.

Designs and Displays

Both tablets have a premium look, but the Surface one features a magnesium alloy body and it’s smaller (290x201x9.1mm), while the iPad Pro is made of aluminum and it’s larger (305.7×220.6×6.9mm). The Surface Pro 3 is heavier at 800grams and has a 12-inch eDP ClearType HD screen supporting a resolution of 2160×1440 at 216ppi and an aspect ratio of 3:2. The awesome thing about the Surface is that it allows you to connect it to up to three external displays, even TVs, so you can watch your recorded videos on a larger screen.

The iPad is available in two variants: the WiFi model weights 713grams and the LTE model is 10grams heavier. On its front side you’ll see the circular home button which has the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, while the screen measures 12.9-inch and it’s a LED-backlit IPS LCD supporting a higher resolution of 2048×2732 pixels at 265ppi.

The Surface tablet runs now on Windows 10 and it’s powered by a dual core Intel Haswell processor, but there are three variants with different performances. The weaker i3-4020Y processor is clocked at 1.5GHz and it’s paired with HD 4200 graphics; the i5-4300U processor is clocked at 1.9GHz (but it can be boosted up to 2.9GHz) and it’s paired with a HD 4400 GPU, while the high end i7-4650U processor supports clock speeds of 1.7 up to 3.3GHz and it’s coupled with HD 5000 graphics. The memory is available in variants of 4GB or 8GB LPDDR3 1600 MHz RAM, depending on the hardware configuration, while the storage options are 64, 128, 256 or 512 GB.

The iPad comes with the new Apple A9X chip, which supports 4GB of RAM and it’s a lot more powerful than the iPhone 6S, but it’s available in variants of internal memories, and their capacities are 32GB and 128GB.

Microsoft device has two cameras with resolutions of 5MP, but it lacks LED flash. The iPad Pro has an iSight rear camera of 8MP and a 1.2MP front facing camera which records 720p videos at 30fps.

While the Surface has microSD port to expand the internal memory, a USB3.0 port and a mini DisplayPort, the iPad Pro has only the Apple Lightning port, but both tablets have in common 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0.

Microsoft device costs between $699 and $1,799, the pencil is free, but if you lose it or damage it, you can buy another one from the Microsoft Store, where its price is $49. Also, the Type Cover has a decent price of $129.99.

iPad Pro 32GB version costs $799, the 128GB version is priced at $949 and the LTE version is a lot more expensive, costing $1,079. The price of the keyboard is $169, while the Pencil costs $99.
