This summer, Motorola released two versions of the Moto X flagship, and the X Play is the mid-range phablet with a smaller screen, while the X Style is more powerful and has a larger screen. Asus’ latest phablet is called Zenfone Selfie and it’s very different from the Zenfone 2 flagship. We decide to compare the Moto X Play with the Zenfone Selfie, because they have a similar processor and other common features. But let’s see what the differences are.

Designs and Displays

Both phablets sport a 5.5-inch screen (the X Play has a TFT-LCD, while the Zenfon Selfie uses IPS technology) supporting a Full HD resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels at 403 ppi.

The X Play is water resistant and its back has diagonal lines running across its surface, while in the middle was placed a vertical faux strip which contains the camera and the M logo. The back is customizable, meaning that if you don’t like the standard color (white or black), you can order the phone from the Moto Maker website, where you’ll be able to select the desired color for the back plate, for the strip and even for the front panel. The X Play measures 148 x 75 x 10.9 mm and its weight is 169 grams.

The Zenfone Selvie has also a plastic back, but with a soft finish and it’s available in three colors: Pure White, Chic Pink and Aqua Blue. Likewise the Zenfone 2, it has the volume buttons placed below the rear camera (which sits in the center and has the flash in its right side), while the power button sits at the top edge. The front has the usual metal band at the bottom of the screen and there are three capacitive buttons between the band and the screen. The dimensions of this device are 156.5 x 77.2 x 10.8 mm and its weight is 170 grams.

Both phones are powered by a Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 octa core processor with four cores running at 1.7GHz and four cores running at 1GHz, which are backed by Adreno 405 graphics and 2 GB of RAM, but the Zenfone Selfie has another variant which supports 3GB of RAM. Also, each device has two variants of internal memories of 16 and 32GB, but Motorola allows you to expand them up to 128GB, while Asus has support for only 64GB. Also, the X Play runs on a newer Android version – v5.1.1 (Lollipop), while the Zenfone Selfie came with Android v5.0 (Lollipop). Also, both devices support NFC and Bluetooth v4.0, but the Moto X Play offers Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band and hotspot, while the Zenfone Selfie features Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with Wi-Fi Direct and hotspot.

Cameras and Batteries

The Moto X Play has a more advanced rear camera of 21MP with dual-LED flash and auto-HDR, but it records 1080p videos @30fps likewise the 13MP front camera of the Zenfone Selfie, which has similar features. However, when it comes to secondary cameras, the X Play loses the battle in favor of the Zenfone Selfie, because its resolution is 5MP, compared to 13MP. Also, Asus integrated a dual-LED flash to take excellent photos in low light conditions.

The battery of the Moto X Play is huge, supporting a capacity of 3630 mAh, which lasts a lot longer than the 3000 mAh battery which powers up the Zenfone Selfie.
