Samsung is Apple’s biggest threat when it comes to smartphones, but Microsoft is its nightmare on the tablet market. That’s because the Surface and Surface Pro devices can be easily transformed into laptops, they have the performance of a laptop and their prices are relatively affordable. Apple had to learn from Microsoft’s strategy and borrowed the idea to add a type cover, which is supported by the new iPad Pro.

Designs and Displays

Both tablets have a metal body, but Apple has a passion for aluminum, while Microsoft made the exterior of its Surface Pro 3 of a magnesium alloy. Their dimensions are relatively similar, but the iPad Pro is lighter, weighting 713g/723g, while it measures 306x221x6.9mm. The Surface Pro 3 weights 800g and its dimensions are 292x201x9.1mm.

None of the previous Apple tablets came with a stylus, or an attachable keyboard, and the iPad Pro is the first tablet to support these accessories. However, the Apple Pencil will cost you $99, while the Smart Keyboard has a price of $169, which means $268 in addition to the $799 starting price. However, you’ll be happy to know that the Apple tablet supports a Lightning connector and has four speakers.

The Surface Pen which can be used to “write” on Surface Pro 3’s screen is cheaper, costing $49, but it’s included in the box, which means that you will get it for free. Also, the Type Cover is priced at $129.99 and it’s available in five color options. The tablet supports a micro SDXC card reader and a full-sized USB 3.0 port.

As for the displays, the iPad Pro has a Retina panel which is protected by an anti-reflective and anti-fingerprint coating, it’s sized at 12.9-inch and supports a resolution of 2732×2048 pixels at 264ppi. The Surface Pro 3 is fitted with a smaller eDP ClearType HD screen sized at 12-inch, supporting a resolution of 2732×2048 pixels at 264ppi.

iPad Pro runs on the new A9X processor, which is 70 percent faster than the A8X and in GPU tasks it’s 80 percent faster, and that’s because it’s helped by the increased RAM capacity of 4GB. The Surface Pro 3 is powered by the 4th-gen Intel Core i3, i5 or an i7 processor, which is paired with a TPM chip for enterprise security, and Intel integrated HD Graphics.

Microsoft has more high-capacity internal drives, with capacities of 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB, while Apple is offering only two variants of 32GB and 128GB.

The iPad Pro will take more detailed images with its 8MP rear camera, but it lacks LED flash, which is a big disadvantage. However, the Surface Pro 3 doesn’t have this feature, either, while its main camera is weaker at 5MP. On the front side, the Apple tablet has a 1.2MP secondary camera, but this time, the roles change, because Apple equipped its tablet with a superior 5MP front camera.
