Microsoft wanted to bring more than a tablet – the market is already full of Android devices which are powered by decent processors. The Surface Pro models are hybrids and they can be converted into laptops, by attaching a Type Cover, which is sold separately. Microsoft equipped them with the fastest Intel Haswell dual-core processors, so they should offer the same performance as a laptop. And the one of Surface Pro 3’s biggest rivals is the sleek Acer Aspire S7 laptop.

The Surface Pro 3 looks pretty awesome with that silver-colored magnesium alloy shell, which has a soft touch. The tablet is thinner and lighter than its predecessor and the upper half has some vents on the edges, which allow the heat which is pushed out by the fan, to dissipate. The docking station houses 5 USB ports – 3 USB 3.0, an additional Mini DisplayPort, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and there is also a 3.5 mm audio socket. The Windows home button is now placed on the left side of the bezel, appearing on the bttom of the tablet, when you’re holding it upright. The dimensions of this tablet are: 290x201x9.1mm, resulting in a total weight of 800 grams.

The Acer Aspire S7 features a more luxurious aspect. The silver pieces are made of aluminum, while the white pieces are covered by Gorilla Glass, the bottom is made of matte plastic, while the 11.6-inch version uses an aluminum backing. The Aspire S7 has full-size keyboard with a Chiclet style layout and white keyboard backlighting with different levels. The brightness is automatically adjusted, depending on the amount of ambient light. The laptop is extremely thin (12mm) and it weights 1,300 grams.

The Surface Pro 3 sports a 12-inch eDP ClearType HD screen which supports a resolution of 2160×1440 pixels with 216ppi pixel density, but the tablet supports also up to three external monitors –even TVs. The Aspire S7 has a 13.3-inch IPS touch-enabled screen with a Full HD resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, being protected by Gorilla Glass 2.

The Aspire S7 is powered by an Intel Core i7-3517U dual-core processor clocked at 1.9GHz, with the possibility to increase its clock speed up to 3.0GHz. The processor is backed by Integrated Intel HD graphics and 4GB DDR3-1600 RAM (1x 4GB; max. supported), while the internal memory has a capacity of 256GB (SSD).

The Surface Pro 3 is available in three variants of Intel Haswell dual core processors: i3-4020Y (1.5 GHz) with HD 4200 graphics, i5-4300U (1.9 up to 2.9 GHz) with HD 4400 graphics and i7-4650U (1.7 up to 3.3 GHz) with HD 5000 graphics. Depending on the configuration, the Surface Pro 3 uses 4 or 8 GB LPDDR3 1600 MHz RAM and it houses one of the four variants of internal memories with capacities of 64, 128, 256 or 512 GB.

The Aspire S7 is found on Amazon at a price of $1,229, while the price of the Surface Pro 3 varies from $699 to $1,799.
