Good things come to those who wait, especially if they wait for an Apple product. Usually, the fans are happy with what they get, and most likely, they will like the new set-top box which replaces the 2013 model. You’ll want to know more about the changes that have been made to the new Apple TV and this is why we’ll compare both media streamers.
The fourth-gen Apple TV looks mostly the same as its predecessor, but it’s 10mm taller (33mm) and 10 grams heavier (272 grams). It looks like a simple black box with rounded corners and only one light on the front side, while on the back you’ll find the ports, from where it can be connected to the TV.
Apple worked on the new remote control and equipped it with a touchpad and two microphones to support voice commands. The “Siri” Remote has sensors for tracking moves, being used as a microconsole with which you can play games.
Other sensors are an accelerometer and gyroscope, while the included buttons are for the menu, display, Siri, Play/Pause and the volume. The previous Apple TV has a standard aluminum remote and it’s not sure yet if the new remote will be compatible with the older set-top box.
The Apple TV 2015 comes in variants of 32GB or 64GB of internal storage and it’s powered by a 64bit A8 system-on-a-chip which was used for the iPhone 6/6 Plus. The previous model came with a 32bit A5 SoC manufactured by Samsung after Apple designed it, but it also has 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage. The Apple TV 2015 doesn’t support 4K, only H.264 video with a resolution of up to 1080p at 60fps.
These are the ports that have been included to the Apple TV 2015 model: power in, HDMI 1.43 out, Ethernet, and USB-C.
The Apple Tv 2015 supports 802.11ac WiFi with MIMO, while the previous model supports WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n). However, the newer model uses multiple input/multiple output.
Apple worked on a new operating system called tvOS which won’t be compatible with the previous devices. Many developers created applications which work across phone/tablet/TV and the users can download them from the Apple store.
The interface has been improved also, but it’s similar to the older one. You will notice that it’s more intuitive and the background is now white instead of black. And the integration of Siri is very useful, because now, the users can search for content, across applications such as Netflix, iTunes, Hulu, HBO and Showtime.
