Motorola didn’t have a 2015 year full of releases, focusing on three successors for its famous models: Moto E (lower-end), Moto G (mid-range) and Moto X (Style and Play), while Microsoft was very prolific, producing many phones on the line. We chose the most appropriate mid-range device to compete against Motorola’s Moto G 2015.

The Moto G 2015 can be customized via the Moto Maker, likewise its predecessor, only that you can select only a different color, not a different material for the back plate, which is textured and has a more rugged feel.

Moto G (2015)

Motorola added a faux metal strip on the rear side, which runs down the middle and houses the camera, the LED flash and the famous dimple with the M logo engraved inside. The phone is water resistant, it measures 142.1×72.4×11.6 mm and has a total weight of 155grams.

The Lumia 640 has a rectangular body (made of plastic), but the corners are not as rounded as on the Moto G. The color options are Glossy cyan, Orange, White and Matte black and the dimensions are 141.3×72.2×8.8 mm, and since it’s slimmer, it means that it’s also lighter. The phone weights 145 grams less.

Both screens are IPS sized at 5-inch and support an average resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels with 294ppi. The Moto G 2015 has a lower pixel density than its predecessor, which supported 326ppi. You will notice that the colors are very vibrant and the level of contrast is decent.

The Lumia 640 has the same hardware configuration as the Moto G 2014, being represented by a Qualcomm MSM8926 Snapdragon 400 chipset which is powered by a quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 processor that couples with Adreno 305 graphics and 1GB of RAM. The phone houses an internal memory of 8GB, but which can be expanded up to 128GB, not up to 32GB.

The limit for the maximum expandable memory size of the Moto G hasn’t been modified, so it’s still 32GB, but the processor was slightly improved, so now it’s a quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 based on a Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 chipset, which is paired with newer Adreno 306 graphics and 1GB of RAM (for the variant with 8GB of storage) or 2GB of RAM (if you pick the model with the double storage).

The Moto G has much more advanced cameras, whose capacities are 13MP (back) and 5MP (front). The list of features includes dual-LED flash, autofocus, auto-HDR and 1080p video capture.

The Lumia 640 sports an 8MP main shooter with 1/4” sensor size and LED flash, while the front camera is 1MP.

The Lumia 640 has a replaceable battery with a capacity of 2500 mAh, but according to GSMArena, it lasts 17 hours and a half when making calls over 3G. The Moto G 2015 has a 2470 mAh non-removable battery with an impressive life.

The Moto G 2015 with 8GB of storage costs 180 dollars on Amazon, while the Lumia 64 is priced at 107 dollars.
