After the Stagefright security exploit was discovered, Google promised to work around the clock with their partners and release security updates as soon as possible. Now we hear that the AT&T HTC One M9 is getting an update that includes the Stagefright fix.

The new Android 5.1 Lollipop update for HTC One M9 owners is being rolled out by AT&T in batches, meaning it can take several days until it becomes available for everyone. Since the AT&T One M9 got updated to Android 5.1 Lollipop back in July, don’t expect any major improvements from the new update.

According to AT&T’s support page, the new HTC One M9 Android 5.1 Lollipop update has build number 2.6.502.18 and a size of 55.53 MB. The carrier says that a Wi-Fi connection is required to download the update file. On the other hand, HTC recommends to have your phone’s battery charged above 50% so the device won’t shut down during the installation procedure.

If you dealt with OTA updates in the past, you already know what to expect. When AT&T’s servers push the new firmware to your device, a message should appear in the notifications panel, letting you know that a software update is now available for download. Tap on the notification, choose ‘Download now’, wait until the download is completed, then select ‘Install now’. At this moment, your phone should automatically reboot and flash the new firmware.

In case you can’t see the system update notification you also have the option to check for the update manually. To perform a manual check head to Settings  General  About phone  Software update then follow the prompts on the screen.

Even though the new Android 5.1 Lollipop update for AT&T HTC One M9 doesn’t bring any new features, you would definitely want the new firmware installed on your phone. The Stagefright bug is the biggest security flaw that affected Android to date and you don’t want to be vulnerable to it.
