Microsoft Windows 10 comes with a number of universal applications such as “Mail” and “People” that you cannot uninstall or remove in the usual way. This is because Microsoft doesn’t allow you to easily uninstall them. Also, there isn’t any way or trick to hide these pre-installed apps from the “All Apps” section in the Start menu.

Since these apps consume a very small amount of space on your hard disk, it is best if you just ignore them in case if you’re not using them. But, in case if you’re using only some of these apps and want to remove others to make your system clutter-free, then you can follow a quick and simple method described in this article. On the other hand, if you’ve already removed or uninstalled the built-in apps, you can get them back as well with the help of a simple command.

Although some of the built-in Windows apps, like the 3D Builder, can be uninstalled the usual way, there are other apps that are more tenacious and not completely incapable of being removed. Just like any other application that you install from the Windows Store, the universal apps of Windows 10 are grouped as AppX packages that can be eradicated from your system.

How to uninstall built-in apps using PowerShell

So, if you’re a Windows 10 user, you can uninstall or remove most of the built-in apps using a PowerShell cmdlet. Using this trick you can get rid of even those apps that normally don’t have the option for uninstalling.

However, you cannot remove some of the most important built-in apps such as Cortana and Microsoft Edge using this trick, and even if you try you’ll receive a message prompting that these apps cannot be removed. So, if you want to remove something like the Mail app for instance, then here’s what you have to do:

Step 1: Launch the Start menu and search for “PowerShell” from the Taskbar.

Step 2: Right-click the search result shortcut saying “Windows PowerShell” and select “Run as administrator.”

Step 3: Agree to the UAC prompt. For the next step, you should know the name of the package of the app you want to uninstall.

Step 4: Next, copy and paste the following command in the PowerShell prompt to see all AppX packages along with their names:

  • Get-AppxPackage|ft Name, PackageFullName-AutoSize or
  • Get-AppxPackage – AllUsers.

Step 5: Next, enter the following PowerShell command while changing the text between asterisks:

For example, if you want to remove 3D Builder, you will have to enter the following command: Get-AppxPackage*3dbuilder*|Remove-AppxPackage

Step 6: Keep entering the commands for the apps you wish to remove while pressing Enter after each command.

That’s all. By applying this simple trick, you can easily uninstall or remove Windows 10 built-in apps such as Calendar, Mail, Sports, Voice Recorder, News, Travel, Money, People, Xbox, Groove Music, and many others if you really feel that you have to remove them in order to keep your system clean.
