The battle pitting iPhone and Android on two different sides is intriguing and not about to have a clear winner declared any time soon.
The battle has not been helped by the perception that Apple’s iOS and iPhone only exist to serve 15% of the richest segment of the global population while everybody else is on Android. The question now seems to be whether iPhone will remain for long now that it serves such a small minority of the global population.
This issue becomes that much more serious upon realization that some app makers might not see much sense in releasing the latest versions of their favorite apps and launching such on operating systems that a tiny segment of the global population uses. If only 15% of the world’s richest people use iOS or iPhone, the app makers might prefer creating applications that the majority of users on Android will find pleasurable.
Research undertaken in the last quarter of 2013 showed that Google’s Android enjoyed close to 78 percent of the market share globally. Expecting iOS, through Apple, to give in and cede more ground without putting up a good fight would be a huge mistake. The same research showed that Apple had 18 percent of the market share globally. By all accounts, it seems that Android will continue seeing an increase in market share.
Revenue from mobile apps has also grown much faster and substantially in Android than in iOS. A number of research firms that have shown the market tilted towards Android include IDC, Distimo and Opera Mediaworks. Android has sold more phones from 2009 to 2014. Apple (or iOS) takes the second position when it comes to phone sales. Microsoft (or Windows) and BlackBerry have performed relatively well in the same period.
The quality of the Android devices has improved substantially. This challenge has proven difficult for Apple to deal with or for users to comprehend better. China and Asia present the two areas where the growth of Smartphone sales will be the highest. Currently, Android is the dominant force in China and Asia, thus presenting one more challenge with which Apple must deal. Apple seems to be suffering because it believes in high pricing and low distribution.
The fact that Android Smartphones cost an average of $200 has also helped increase their popularity around the world. This compares favorably with iPhone that costs an average of $600.
On the other hand, it is not all gloom for iPhone or Apple. This is because of the incredible performance when it comes to branding as well as quality. The market share that buys iPhone believes that they are not only buying into a global brand, but also receiving value for money.
Android has a major battle on its hands. This isbecause, in technology, products tend to be cheaper with time as quality improves substantially. Over time, the brands that sell their products expensively always lose out to the cheaper products.
Currently, it might be difficult to declare outrightly that Android is better than iPhone or vice versa because the battle between the two is not about to end anytime soon.
