Are you in a car, driving for hours and suddenly you don’t know which way to go? Well, Google Maps can help you with this issue, as long as you are connected to the internet. However, there are a lot of areas all over the world where you can’t get a signal on your mobile phone, which means that you will need to have the maps saved on your device in order to still get directions from Google Maps.
Well, Google Maps allows you save maps so that you can use them while in offline mode and today we’re going to explain you how to do it. These steps are identical for both Android and iOS, so make sure that you follow them in order to save the maps that you want.
Keep in mind that this feature is available only for Android and iOS operating systems and it is not yet known when they will be available for other mobile operating systems.
You will also need to update your Google Maps before doing this. Google Maps v3 is the latest version for iOS while Google Maps v8 is the latest version for Android OS.
Saving maps offline
In order to use this feature, you will need to login on your Google account. After that, type “OK Maps” in the search bar and tap on the search button and a new dialog at the top of the map will ask you if you want to save the map. Now, you will need to tap the “Save” button and zoom in or out and move through the map in order to save the area that you want to see while using it in offline mode.
Everything that you see on-screen will get downloaded and saved on your mobile device, allowing you to use it later when you don’t have internet access on your mobile device. With other words, in case you zoom in an area, you will get all the information regarding that area, such as gas stations, hotels, coffee shops etc.
Once you’ve selected the area that you want to see in offline mode, tap on the Save button from the bottom of the screen and a new dialog will open, asking you to type a name for the map you’re about to save.
Accessing maps while offline
To access the maps that you’ve saved is quite easy, as you will just need to open Google Maps, tap on the menu button and select “Your Places”. After that, scroll down to Offline maps and select View all and manage.
