Windows 10 got officially released on July 29 and there are already a lot of users who purchased the new Windows OS or upgraded their Windows 7/Windows 8 license to Windows 10 for free.

There are a lot of features that Windows 10 comes with and we’re pretty sure that they are very useful. However, there are many security settings that everyone should know about before starting using Windows 10.

Windows 10 Mobile

For example, when you open your browser and search for a place to eat, Bing already knows your location. At the same time, you will see some banner ads that know about your secret hobby.

There is a lot of personal information that Windows 10 collects from its users, such as credit card numbers, GPS location and even audio and video messages. However, you are informed about this when you install the Windows 10 OS on your computer, but as usual, not many read the Terms of Use.

So, in the privacy statement, Microsoft informs you that there are three reasons why the company uses your personal data: to improve their services, to send communications, including promotional communications and to display ads.

Don’t create a Microsoft account

Windows 10 will also ask you to create a Microsoft account, but you should skip this step in case you’re concerned about your private information. By not creating a Microsoft account, you will keep your activity and information on your computer. In case you’ve created a Microsoft account, you can always delete it by going to Settings->Accounts->Your Account.

Cortana is great, but not for everyone

Cortana is surely one of the best features that Windows 10 comes with. However, we remind you that Cortana has the ability to “learn” about you and create a more personal experience. However, in order to do this, Cortana will gather a lot of information about you such as: contacts, location, handwriting data, speech and more.

Disabling the tracking

First of all, you will need to go to the privacy settings. To do this, click on Start->Settings->Privacy and from here you will be able to disable how your computer uses your microphone, camera, location etc. Also since you are in the Privacy Menu, we suggest you to click on Feedback & Diagnostics and change the Feedback & Diagnostics to “Never” and the Diagnostic and Usage Data to “Basic”. By doing this, you will prevent Microsoft from getting random information from your computer.

Browser History

In case you are using the new Microsoft Edge browser, then you should know that this application is sending the internet browsing history to Microsoft. However, you can turn this feature off by going to the application’s Settings->Advanced Settings->View Advanced Settings and under Privacy and Services turn off the “Have Cortana Assist Me in Microsoft Edge” feature.

Windows 10 Build 14385

Since you are still in Privacy and Services menu, you should also turn off the “use page prediction to speed up browsing, improve reading, and make my overall experience better” option.
