What Is Comio

A new Chinese brand enters the Indian smartphone market. The brand’s name is Comio, and has been launched in 2014 from Chinese Original Device Manufacturer Topwise Communication, and in the last three years it has been available only in the Chinese market.

Comio plans to invest Rs500 crore over the next two years to build its presence in India. There, the company will compete with Samsung, Xiaomi and Micromax, aiming to capture 5% market share in three years.

Comio CEO, Sanjay Kumar Kalirona said:“We have been an ODM to many players, including those in India. There is a huge opportunity in India and we are keen on tapping that”, adding that Comio will plays in the Rs6,000-12,000 price bracket, which is a “sweet spot” accounting for 35-40% of the smartphone market in volume terms.

Why India?

India is one of the world’s fastest growing smartphone markets, with 27 million smartphones were shipped in India in the January-March quarter of 2017, according to an IDC research.

Founded in June 2005, TopWise Communication is one of the biggest ODMs in China, and used to make products for many Indian handset makers, like Micromax. Comio CEO said that the company will no more make products for others as it is looking at building its own brand in India. Comio plans to follow an offline-only model with a focus on distributors while building a strong after-sales service ecosystem.
