Samsung Galaxy S8 is one of the best phones that money can buy right now. Other than being the standard setter in terms of design, the smartphone also comes with a bunch of new features that make it worth the price tag.
One such feature is the support for desktop functionality, a feature that allows users to turn the phone into a desktop thanks to a Samsung DeX dock on which the phone is placed. This DeX device allows users of the Galaxy S8 to connect the phone to a monitor, keyboard and mouse and thus start enjoying the phone as they would do when using a computer. The Samsung DeX has ports that allow Galaxy S8 users to attach the said accessories, but as it turns out, this is not the only nifty feature that the phone supports as far as desktop environments are concerned.
Apparently, it is possible to unlock your Windows 10 PC using the Galaxy S8 or S8+. The tech giant has just rolled out a new update to its two year old Samsung Flow app to include support for the new Windows Hello feature that comes pre-loaded on the latest operating system from Microsoft, Windows 10.
With the updated version of Samsung Flow app, owners of not just Samsung Galaxy S8, but also other Samsung phones will be able to unlock a Windows 10 PC using the phone’s fingerprint scanner. As you may have already noticed, the first prerequisite is that your Samsung Galaxy phone must have a fingerprint scanner. This means that the likes of Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S6, S6 Edge and S6 Edge+ as well as the phablet Galaxy Note 5 are also on board.
Other than the flagships, those using the likes of Samsung Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A5 handsets can also enjoy this functionality of unlocking their Windows 10 PCs using a fingerprint scanner. The Google Play Store listing, where you can freely download and install the Samsung Flow app from, also confirms that the Galaxy Tab S3 is supported. The second condition required to use this feature to unlock your PC is that it must be using the latest Windows 10 OS.
Another condition required in order to use your Samsung Galaxy phone to unlock a Windows 10 PC is that any of the mentioned smartphone must be installed with at least Android Marshmallow while the tablet needs to be installed with at least Android Nougat. So, the question that many would be asking is how does this really work?
How to unlock a Windows 10 PC using a Samsung Galaxy phone fingerprint scanner
If you are asking how this works, well, it’s quite simple. Once your smartphone or tablet has met the already mentioned conditions, the next thing is to download and install the latest version of Samsung Flow app from the Google Play Store. The app is free to download and install.
Also ensure that the same app has been installed on your Windows 10 PC, where it can be found in the Windows Store. You also need to ensure that your PC is installed with the latest Windows 10 Creators Update or newer, otherwise, this will not work. When both devices have the Samsung Flow app installed, launch the app on both devices and on the PC, pick the phone or tablet in question and hit the pair button. Go ahead and confirm the passcode on both gadgets in order to complete the Bluetooth pairing.
When the two are paired, clock the Register device button and once again confirm the passcode on the two devices in question. To complete the process, enter your PIN and that’s it! You will now be able to unlock your Windows 10 PC by simply scanning your finger on the phone/tablet’s scanner.
Furthermore, it will also be possible to sync smartphone notifications to your Windows 10 PC. This is not a new feature, but before this update, it was limited to Samsung PCs. Now it’s available for all Windows 10 users.
