Web browsers give different responses for certain issues. In this particular case, “Server not found” is displayed when Firefox couldn’t find or access the site you’re asking it to. The equivalent in Google Chrome is “Google Chrome could not find [address].”
What could possibly cause this to happen? There are a few:
- An Incorrect entry of the website address. This is pretty common and you shouldn’t feel too bad about it. It happens to the best of us, they say. You can try typing the address in again – slowly this time and surely; double check the spelling if you have to – to see if the problem still persists. If that solves the issue, you can bookmark the site on your browser so you eliminate typing altogether.
- The DNS server is down. You can do several tests to make sure that the problem isn’t on your end. First, you can try connecting a different device to the internet; if it is able to connect then the first device has a problem. You can also power cycle your modem and router; if that doesn’t solve the issue then maybe your ISP is having some trouble.
- The firewall, proxy and other settings may not be configured properly. Try to make sure that you allowed Firefox access to the web even if your device is protected by a firewall.
Trying a different browser
When you are greeted with a Server not Found message, one of the first things you can do is try checking if you get a similar response using another browser. It’s always a good idea to have more than one browser on your computer for situations like this one. For instance, you can have Internet Explorer to pair with Firefox. Better yet, you can pair Firefox with Google Chrome.
If the secondary browser can load the website you were trying to access, then there’s something up with Firefox. You can do the following:
- Remove Firefox from the list of trusted programs from your internet security program. Sometimes issues with connecting to the internet happen after updates. If this was the case, try removing Firefox from the list then add it back.
- Check proxy settings in Firefox. You won’t be able to load websites if the proxy server you’re using is having some trouble. Here’s how to fix it:
- Click the menu button then choose Options
- Select Advanced
- Select Network
- Click Settings under the Connection section
- Change proxy settings
- Click Ok
Disabling DNS Prefetching
Firefox uses a technique called DNS Prefetching so websites can be loaded quickly. You can disable this to see if it solves the issue. Here’s how:
- Type about:config in the address bar
- Click I accept the risk! when a warning message appears
- Right-click on the list of preferences then select New then choose Boolean
- Type network.dns.disablePrefetch in the window that says Enter the preference name then click Ok
- Choose true when asked for a value then click Ok
If everything fails, you might want to check your router or give your ISP a call to see if there are connectivity issues.
