With smartphones occupying a prominent place in people’s lives today, there are a plethora of apps to make using these handsets memorable.

Among them is a horde of messaging apples that help you save on your SMS charges. Most of these apps are cross-platform apps that allow them to work on almost any platform that a smartphone operates on. WhatsApp and Viber are two such popular free smobile apps that are currently the most popular among the masses. Needless to say, the apps undergo periodic updates to give users the best features and options possible to make their chats livelier and more memorable. The following article makes a comparative study on what these two giant apps have to offer.

Compatibility

Both the apps run on the three key operating systems today – iOS, Windows, and Android. If you own an iOS smartphone, then you must ensure that your handset operates on at least iOS 3.4 irrespective of the app you choose. Of course, higher versions are more than welcome. While WhatsApp can be used on both Windows 7.5 and Windows 8 devices, Viber works only with Windows 8. However, the Android WhatsApp runs only on Android 2.1 and higher whereas Viber works on even Android 2.0.

Verdict: There is no clear winner in this case. But, if you must really consider giving a scoring point, then the credit goes to Viber as it is compatible with lower versions of two operating systems.

Interface

Both WhatsApp and Viber have relatively simple and easy to use interfaces. The WhatsApp interface differs based on the operating system used. However, neither of them make things complicated for the user. Viber prefers to use the same standard white and purple interface irrespective of the operating system.

Verdict: With really user friendly interfaces, neither app really wins the battle. Both apps get the same score as far as the interface aspect is concerned.

Messaging and Calling Facility

You can send almost the same stuff with both the apps. These include ordinary text messages, audio clips, group and individual chats, stickers, emoticons, videos, and images. However, WhatsApp takes care not to consume too much bandwidth, Viber ultimately eats a lot into this. In other words, it is more feasible to use Viber with a Wi-Fi connection. With a mobile or cellular connection, you could run out of credit very fast with your Viber app on.

With WhatsApp, you can make calls to only those people in your contacts list who use the same service. On the other hand, Viber uses an additionally service called Viber Out. Viber and Viber Out allow you to make calls to within and outside the Viber network respectively. But once again, Viber offers this functionality at a cost of taking up too much of your Internet connection.

Verdict: WhatsApp undoubtedly wins this round. When it can do the same things as its competitor without affecting your data connection, there is no doubt why this app should not take the lead. The fact that the app cannot be used to make calls outside the network is less significant compared to the Internet volume consumed. You can always make normal calls to these numbers.

Security

With WhatsApp, you can block contacts with whom you do not want to interact using the app. You can also turn off the last seen timestamp so that others will not know when you last checked on the app. However when you do this, you will not be able to see when others in your list accessed WhatsApp last. Also, it can take a maximum of one day for this setting to get activated. You can revert it any time you want, but with a 24 hour wait once again. As for Viber, this app also integrates with your contact list. In this case also, you can turn off your last online status with the same condition as WhatsApp holding valid here too.

Additionally, Viber relies on Google Analytics to get certain details of its users like maintenance services, data storage, and IP address. The default setting for this is ON. You can always turn it OFF through the Settings menu. A revert is also possible if needed.

Verdict: Although both apps rely on your mobile number for their working and contact list integration, they assure you of equal levels of security. Hence they can be considered at par in this regard.
