Apple and Samsung rule the world. No, they’re not dictators, but their names are known worldwide. Their products are desired and every year, the fans are expecting successors of the famous flagships. The iPhone lovers have two new models to choose from: the smaller iPhone 6S and the phablet version, while the Samsung fans can buy the new Galaxy Note 5 with a revamped design. More about the two rival phablets you’ll find out below.
Designs and Displays
The iPhone 6S Plus is identical to its predecessor, featuring an aluminum construction (7000 series) which made the body a bit taller, wider and thicker. This material is more resistant and the device no longer bends, but you’ll notice that the phablet is heavier, weighting 20 grams more (192 grams). The dimensions are 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3 mm and the screen is unchanged, having the same size of 5.5-inch with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels at 401 ppi, but underneath was integrated the 3D Touch technology, which detects the level of pressure applied (soft and hard), and responds accordingly. The fingerprint scanner has been upgraded, being called now Touch ID v2, but it supports the usual Apple Pay mobile payment.
The Note 5 is no longer made of plastic, as it borrowed the glass and metal design from the Galaxy S6. Basically, it’s a supersized Galaxy S6 with a stylus, which measures 153.2 x 76.1 x 7.6 mm and weights 171 grams. The back, which is made of glass, is available in four variants of colors: Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, Silver Titan and White Pearl, while Apple added a Rose Gold variant to the new iPhones. A fingerprint scanner is also found on the front panel of the Note 5, being hidden inside the home button, but which has an oval shape. The screen is larger and using Super AMOLED technology, which is capable to offer a QHD resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels with 518 ppi. The images are more vibrant, but they drain the battery pretty fast.
This is a close battle between two 14nm processors – the Apple A9 with two cores running at 2GHz vs the Exynos 7420 octa core processor with four cores running at 1.5GHz and four cores running at 2.1GHz. The iPhone 6S Plus has double RAM, while the Note 5 supports even 4GB of RAM, but we’re waiting to see the results of the test, to see if the Apple phablet is faster.
However, while none of the devices come with a microSD card slot, the internal memory is limited to 16/64/128 GB on the iPhone 6S Plus and 32/64 GB on the Note 5.
The rear camera of the iPhone 6S Plus has a higher resolution of 12MP, which has been increased from 8MP, and it benefits from a new feature which is called Live Photos. Neither the front camera has been forgotten, as now it supports 5MP. The other features are already known: phase autofocus detection, OIS, dual-LED flash and video capture at 2160p@30fps.
The Note 5 has the pair of cameras from the Galaxy S6: 16Mp on the back and 5MP on the front. No important improvements have been made to the camera software, but the images really look accurate and colorful.
The batteries have a similar capacity – 2915 mAh on the iPhone 6S Plus and 3000 mAh on the Note 5. More tests will be performed soon, to see how much they last in reality. Apple claims that, thanks to the new iOS 9, the iPhone 6s Plus will have an extended battery life – by 3 hours.
