We have had a number of music related posts in the past, but this project is fresh and actually very clever: an EEG helmet that lets the user to hear their own brainwaves in real time, straight away influencing their mind, and hereby creating a relaxing mental loop.Inspired by meditation practices, Aiste Noreikaite, a London-based artist and designer has outfitted a motorcycle helmet with a NeuroSky EEG headset to create music based on the person’s attentiveness and brain activity.

“The user hears the sound that is being generated by his brainwaves. The brainwaves recognise themselves in that sound and react to it very positively, then this is looped back to them via sound again and again”, said Noreikaite about the helmet to Vice’s The Creators Project.

In other words, as stated on the project page, “the helmet uses those signals as control messages to shape pure sine waves and reflect the person’s emotional and cognitive state with sound”.

Basically it’s up to you how you want to use this unusual helmet: as a meditation tool or as a ‘soundtrack’ to different experiences in your environment. Or both.

When the user have a clear state of mind, the sounds become higher, and when they focus on particular subjects, the sounds become faster and more rhythmic. However, be prepared that “It’s not like all of a sudden it’s an orchestral piece, or a piano piece. It’s all quite minimal and electronic”.

According to Wired the idea isn’t totally new. Back in the 1800s a Prussian physicist was already doing research on binaural beats, sounds that get played into a listener’s ears at different frequencies.

Sadly you won’t be able to experience the looping sounds of your own brainwaves just yet, as Noreikaite’s Experience Helmet is still an artistic concept. UPDATE: We’ve been reminded by Aiste that the Helmet is actually done and working. Apologies for the mistake!
